Old Fashioned Pumpkin Pie

So for those of you who have never heard of this pie, let me explain. It's the texture of apple, with the flavor of pumpkin. Unlike the pureed version where all of the flavors are blended together to make one, with the Old Fasioned Pumkin Pie, you get to taste the different layers of pumkin, spices, sweetness and of course the extra flaky crust on the top.

My favorite dessert is pie. But old fashioned pumpkin pie is definitely my all time favorite. I don’t mind the pureed pumpkin pie, but if I had to choose, it would be old fashioned pumpkin pie every time.

Whenever my foster mother would make old fashioned pumpkin pie, I would be so excited because I was pretty much the only kid that really liked it, meaning that I got almost the whole pie to myself without any fighting. Yeah, we’ve been known to fight over a pie or two. Anyway, so when my foster mother would make pies for our Thanksgiving gathering, she would usually make half a dozen to a dozen different pies, and they would mainly be pureed pumpkin pie. Only one, maybe two (if I was lucky) would be the old fashioned type. Now like I said, I do enjoy the pureed pumpkin pie, but if the old fashioned is around, the pureed just isn’t good enough anymore. My foster mother used to call it ‘duma souta’ meaning I had a bad attitude.

So at Thanksgiving, one of my foster brother-in-laws loved the old fashioned pumpkin pies as much as I, maybe even more. And in retrospect I respect that. But as a kid, everytime I would see him grab another slice of pie, I would become sadder, because that meant one less piece for me. But what got me really heated was when I knew that someone who didn’t really appreciate the pie would grab a slice. In my mind, I would lash out and scream at them. So yeah, maybe duma souta.

*full disclaimer: Hey, I’m Donna. Lance’s wife. I type while he talks. He is currently ranting about how amazing the old fashioned pie is, and how the pureed is trash. But he ate the pureed last weekend and loved it. I’m trying to tell him that most people have never heard of this type of pie and he just isn’t listening.*

So for those of you who have never heard of this pie, let me explain. It’s the texture of apple, with the flavor of pumpkin. Unlike the pureed version where all of the flavors are blended together to make one, with the Old Fasioned Pumkin Pie, you get to taste the different layers of pumkin, spices, sweetness and of course the extra flaky crust on the top. I really hope that you get a chance to try this pie and I hope you like it as much as my family and I.

First, cut up the sugar pumpkin, peel it, and slice it up like you would apples for an apple pie.

Put the pumpkin slices in a medium-size bowl. Combine water and vanilla in a separate bowl, pour over pumpkin and mix. In another small bowl, combine the cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, sugar, salt, and flour. Pour that over the pumpkin and again mix it thoroughly, covering all slices.

Dump pumpkin slices into pie crust. Plop globs of butter on top of the pumpkin and cover with pie crust top.

Bake at 350 for 1-1 1/2 hours, until the edges are just starting to brown.

  1. I grew up with the pureed Pumpkin Pie, so delicious! My husband grew up with this old fashioned pumpkin pie you speak of. His Mom still makes it for gatherings, but alas, I just don’t like it.

  2. My dad said his mom made a pie very similar to this and it was his favorite. I scoured the internet for a recipe like this and this is the only one I’ve found. I can’t wait to try and make it for him. I know it’ll make him happy regardless. Thank you for posting!

  3. Thank you so much! I was looking for a pumpkin pie that was not pureed as I have a child who does not like the pureed texture but does like the flavor. This was a big hit! Appreciate you sharing your history and this great recipe!

  4. Lol! I never realized how many people haven’t heard of this type of pumpkin pie! I make both kinds actually…I and my oldest daughter prefer the “pumpkin slice pie” … their father and my youngest daughter prefer the “pumpkin mush pie” … with me processing the pumpkin of course!! 🥴…a lot of work. This is actually the FIRST site/blog I’ve ever found a recipe for it! Keep it up!

  5. I have spent the morning checking my ‘old’ cookbooks for this recipe (w/ some recipes wee over a year old). I came across it several days ago and could not find it back. I can’t wait to try it. Thank you for your research and letting me print it. Your crust looks wonderful. Can I ask. For that recipe complete w/ technic’s. It can make or break the way a recipe turns out. Thank you again.

  6. So…. can I assemble this and freeze it until I need it???

It’s what a friend’s mom used to make for his birthday… so I thought I would try it… but he has a six hour drive home…. it would be fine traveling frozen I think.
