My Foster Mother

There was a time in my life when I was growing up, when we went to church 5 days a week.  It wasn’t a short walk or drive get there, but a 30 minute drive out of town. And my foster mother’s radio selection was pretty terrible. And I really dreaded the ride to and from church for that reason. At any given time there would be some sort of Christian program on the radio that we would have to listen to. She did have one tape in the van, a Johnny Cash Gospel mix.  And if I was lucky, I could convince her to put it in and let us listen to it. And it was through those many rides to church that began my love and appreciation for Johnny Cash. There was one song in particular on that tape that stuck out to me, Over the Next Hill (We’ll Be Home). She would always sing along with the tape, and when the song would end, she would always proclaim “Over the next hill, I’ll be home” .

I do not have a recipe for you today, but instead am writing this post because this morning, at 7:00 am, my foster mother passed away. And ever since I went to see her and say goodbye this morning, this song has been in my head. And because she and her recipes were the inspiration for this blog, I thought it was only fitting to share this with you.

She was the reason that I decided to start this blog to share her recipes, and also the reason that I stopped posting in the spring time when she got sick. During my visits to see her in the nursing home and hospital, I would read her my latest blog post and it would always put a smile on her face. And after I was finished telling her my side of the story, she would continue telling it the way she that she saw it. I’d let her know the amount of views and interest that her recipes would have from all over the world and, although she didn’t quite understand how the internet works, she was always so amazed by how many people actually cared about the different recipes that she used to make.
